Бетонні шахи від propro — це продукт ручної роботи. У комплект входять 16 фігур білого, 16 чорного кольорів та бетонне ігрове поле сірого кольору товщиною 10 мм. Шахи доступні у класичному та сучасному стилях.

Concrete chess sets from propro are handmade. Each set includes 16 pieces in white, 16 pieces in black, and a 10 mm thick concrete playing field of grey color. The sets are available in either classical or modern style.

CONCEPT

«В основі розробки серії настільних ігор з бетону криється ідея відновити інтерес до живого спілкування людей, бо гра – ефективний комунікативний інструмент. Ми хотіли створити тактильний, масивний продукт з фактурою та нерівностями. Я впевнений, що майбутнє за цифровим світом, але ключові рішення все одно приймаються віч-на-віч», – зазначає Слава Балбек, архітектор та співатор бетонних шахів.

“The main idea of a concrete board games series is to renew a live communication between people as the game is an effective interaction tool. We wanted to create a tactile, solid product with texture and imperfections. I am convinced that the future is in the digital world, but people make key decisions face to face,” comments Slava Balbek, architect and co-author of the concrete chess sets.

IN SEARCH OF THE SHAPE AND PIECES

Спочатку ми планували розробити лише сучасну серію шахів, але в результаті аналізу ринку, консультацій з шаховими професіоналами та любителями, прийняли рішення запускати відразу обидві версії.

At first, we planned to develop only a modern series of chess. After reviewing the market and consulting with chess professionals and amateurs, we decided to launch both versions concurrently.

THE KNIGHT

Кінь – одна з найскладніших і найхаризматичніших фігур у шахах. Переважно кінь задає характер усім фігурам. У сучасній версії він пройшов всього кілька раундів правок і був прийнятий одноголосно з легкої руки Роми Хорошилова. Класичний кінь натомість був ретельно опрацьований як окремий персонаж зі своєю мімікою і настроєм.

The knight is one of the most complex and charismatic chess pieces. The knight primarily sets the tone for the rest of the playing figures. Its modern style was edited only several times when Roman Horoshylov unanimously accepted the final version. The classic knight instead was carefully developed as a distinct character with its own facial expressions and mood.

PROTOTYPES

Усі фігури проходили ряд виробничих циклів. Ми відпрацьовували форми у металі, гіпсі, друкували на 3D-принтерах, виточували з дерева. Усе для того, щоб знайти ідеальну техніку і текстуру для майстер-моделі заливки.

All pieces went through a series of production cycles. We tested shapes in metal and plaster, printed on 3D-printers, carved out of wood to find the perfect technique and texture for the casting master model.

THE CHESSBOARD

Ми тестували різні типи матеріалів дошки та нанесення розмітки. Хотілося, щоб дошка була досить масивною, з якісним покриттям, тактильною і практичною. Кожен із варіантів був виготовлений в оригінальному розмірі і пройшов повноцінні ігрові тести готовими фігурами. Основними конкурентами були FunderMax, фанера, пластик і бетон. У підсумку ми віддали перевагу саме бетону, оскільки нам вдалося знайти рецептуру для заливки, щоб товщина поля склала 10 мм.

Different types of board materials and label applications were tested. We wanted the board to be solid, with a high-quality coating, tactile, and practical. Each of the samples was made in the original size and tested during the full-fledged game with the produced chess pieces. The main competitors were boards made of FunderMax, plywood, plastic, and concrete. As a result, we preferred concrete because we managed to find a casting formula that makes the board 10 mm thick.

PACKAGING AND BOX INSERTS

Працюючи над упаковкою для шахів, нам важливо було знайти баланс між захистом продукту від пошкоджень та оптимальною вагою готового грального набору. На етапі проробок ми виготовляли цільно дерев'яну та фанерні коробки, тестували дошки на магнітах. Зупинили свій вибір на класичних картонних коробках.
У якості ложемента експериментували з пробкою, поролоном та ізолоном.

While developing chess packaging, it was essential for us to find a balance between protecting the product from damage and the most appropriate weight of the finished chess set. We produced solid wood and plywood boxes, tested magnet boards during the sampling stage. After all, we decided to choose the classic cardboard boxes.
We experimented on a corkboard, rubber, and izolon foams to find the best version of the box inserts.

TEAM

Дизайн шахів розробили український архітектор Слава Балбек та команда дизайнерів: Аліна Вовкотруб і Роман Хорошилов.
Фігури упаковані окремо у м'який вкладиш, що повторює форму боксу 320 мм х 320 мм. Вага шахів разом із боксом складає 3 кг.

The chess design was developed by the Ukrainian architect Slava Balbek and a team of designers Alina Vovkotrub and Roma Horoshylov.
A 320x320 mm plywood box containing chess pieces has a soft molded insert, where each mold nestles a piece of a corresponding shape. Weight of chess together with boxing: 3 kg.
